Bhaktraj Shree Somla Khachar

“Mulji Brahmachari, Somla Khachar, and other devotees who have lived in close proximity to Me for many years are well-acquainted with My nature.” According to these words of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan, Somla Khachar of Botad was a heroic devotee who attained such spiritual heights that he could recognize the natural and spontaneous nature of Shreeji Maharaj.

Just as Laxman served Ram, Somla Khachar—a young man of towering stature—renounced royal luxury and grandeur in the prime of his youth. Wearing white garments, he dedicated his entire life to the seva of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan. He became a leader among the bodyguards of Maharaj and earned a place in the Sarvamangal Stotra. Whenever Maharaj would ride Manki Ghodi, Somla Khachar would always be present in His service, holding a chhatra (royal umbrella) over Him.

When Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan sent a letter to 18 individuals commanding them to leave their homes, Somla Khachar’s name stands out prominently among those devotees who proved their state of detachment and absolute obedience by placing Maharaj’s agyna above all else.

Somla Khachar’s royal lifestyle was not as one would expect. His wife, sons, and family were all very pious; however, instead of living a comfortable life through them, he endured many hardships, but never once did his nishchay weaken. Within a short span of time, due to brief illnesses, both of his young sons passed away. The responsibilities of the household fell upon him once again. Despite this, he remained unwavering in his seva and samarpan (surrender). He even sold his ancestral land to remain constantly in the seva of Maharaj. As a result, many accounts of his life are found in the scriptures. His name is specially mentioned in divine lilas of bravery.
