Dosabhai’s Test

In the village of Sardhar, there lived three brothers—Dosa Bhai, Jutha Bhai, and Hansraj Bhai—who were initially followers of Ramanand Swami but became devoted disciples of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan after witnessing His divine power. One day, wishing to demonstrate the depth of their faith, Shree Hari visited their home and gave a startling command: “Sell all your household goods, your buffaloes, and your horses immediately”.

Without a moment’s hesitation, Dosa Sheth complied, sold his belongings, and placed the resulting pile of money at the Shree Hari’s feet, declaring, “I am your servant; I will do as you say”. Shree Hari then instructed him to tie all the money and his jewelry into a bundle and follow Him. They walked two leagues away from the village until they arrived at an old, abandoned well. There, Shree Hari gave an even more shocking order: “Throw this bundle of wealth into the well”.

Dosa Sheth immediately cast his life’s savings into the depths. Even then, he did not allow a single doubt to enter his mind regarding the Shree Hari’s motives. Shree Hari then took Dosa Sheth and his family to the village of Bandhiya, where He arranged for their housing and care through a local ruler.

Later, it was revealed that the Shree Hari’s command had been a divine shield. While Dosa Sheth was away on a pilgrimage He had ordered, a band of armed robbers had raided his village and specifically targeted his house. Finding it empty and learning that the owner was gone, the robbers fled. Eventually, Shree Hari told Dosa Sheth to return to the well with assistance and retrieve his bundle of wealth, which remained perfectly safe. Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan later praised Dosa Sheth, teaching that a devotee who truly understands the greatness of Bhagwan will never waver from Bhagwan’s agyna.

This prasang has been documented by Sadguru Shree Adharanand Swami in Pur 3, Tarang 52 of Shree Haricharitramrut Sagar.
