Sadguru Shree Shunyatitanand Swami

Shunyatitanand Swami lived a life defined by austerity, renunciation, selfless service, and devotion, through which he liberated countless souls. Those who associated with him attained a state of spiritual enlightenment and realized the divine presence of the Lord. Although the exact birthplace of this influential and divine personality is not recorded, it is said that just as Queen Mainavati inspired King Gopichand toward detachment, Shunyatitanand Swami’s mother encouraged him with spiritual teachings and sent him to become a sadhu.

Once, Khimji Sutar was once by Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan to fetch wood for making kanthis (sacred necklets). Khimji Sutar traveled from Bhavnagar to Surat by ship. On the vessel, a wandering ascetic who harbored ill will toward Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan, cast enchanted black gram seeds at Khimji Sutar to harm him through tantric means. This ascetic had cast many tantric spells on people, killing them in order to loot them. However, because Khimji Sutar had the exclusive protection and refuge of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan, the seeds had no effect on him. Upon reaching the port of Surat, after being challenged by Khimji, the ascetic realized his mistake, asked for forgiveness, and sought refuge in Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan. After hearing the sincere inner prayers of this seeker, Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan initiated him and named him “Shunyatitanand.”

Shunyatitanand Swami was the nephew of Narnarayananand Swami and the primary disciple of Nityanand Swami. He remained in the personal service of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan for seventeen years, earning His immense rajipo. Later, Shunyatitanand Swami traveled to Surat, where he extensively spread the teachings of the Satsang fellowship. He invited Pavitranand Swami to Surat and oversaw the construction of a beautiful pinnacled temple (shikharbaddh mandir) there. Due to his proficiency in administrative and practical matters, he was appointed as the Mahant (head priest) of the Surat Rampura temple.

After Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan departed for His divine abode, Akshardham, Nityanand Swami planned the construction of a memorial shrine (Smruti Mandir) at Laxmi Wadi in Gadhada, at the exact site where the cremation of Bhagwan Shree Swaminarayan had taken place. This construction was carried out under the expert supervision of Shunyatitanand Swami, proving his skills in management and architecture.

As a Sadhu whose words carried divine power, he alleviated the miseries of many devotees. When the fundraising for the Surat temple began, a very devout but poor follower named Dayaram Khatri pledged one hundred rupees, despite his humble circumstances where he earned only four annas (1 anna = 1/16th of a rupee) a day to support his family. Overwhelmed by worry about how he would fulfill his pledge, he could not sleep and eventually confided in his friend, Dhirajrambhai. Dhirajrambhai gave him a hundred rupees. When Swami learned of this devotion, he was deeply pleased. He then had Dhirajram give another hundred rupees to Dayaram and instructed Dayaram to start a business with it, promising he would prosper. By the blessings of Swamishree, Dayaram became very wealthy.

This great benefactor of the Satsang fellowship and redeemer of devotees’ sorrows, Shunyatitanand Swami, left his physical body on Magshar Sud 10 Samvat 1931 (1874 C.E.) in Surat, attaining Akshardham.
